Staying Safe After Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy can make your body weaker against infections. Sometimes, even a small infection can turn serious very quickly. The biggest warning sign is a fever (100.4°F / 38°C or higher) — this is known as febrile neutropenia.
Before Chemotherapy -
-
Get all blood tests your doctor recommends.
-
Ask if you need vaccines (flu, pneumonia, COVID-19).
-
Learn: “Fever = Emergency.” Call your doctor right away if it happens.
-
Practice good hygiene: wash hands, brush teeth gently, eat safe food.
After Chemotherapy -
-
Check the temperature every day.
-
If fever is 100.4°F / 38°C or more → call your doctor or go to hospital immediately.
-
Avoid raw food, crowded places, and sick contacts.
-
Wash hands often, rest well, and drink clean water.
When to Seek Help Right Away -
-
Fever or chills
-
Trouble breathing
-
Burning when urinating
-
Mouth sores or sore throat
-
Unusual bleeding or bruising

A fever after chemo is never “just a fever.”
Act fast — it could save a life.
